A member of the National Neurotrauma Society, Dr. Mitchell currently collaborates in
Traumatic Brain Injury research with Dr. Ryan S. Kitagawa, UTHealth Houston
Neurosciences; Dr. Joacir Graciolli, Department of Neurological Surgery, University of Miami;
Dr. Wellingson Paiva and Dr. Raphael Bertani, University of Sao Paulo; and Dr. Amir Faraji,
Clinical Innovations Laboratory, Houston Methodist.
Dr. Mitchell earned her medical degree from Estacio de Sa University in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil,
where she served as Vice President of the Neurology Student Interest Group. She completed
her education with a full tuition merit scholarship awarded by the Brazilian Education
Department. After graduating from medical school, Dr. Mitchell held positions with two family
medicine clinics and with the Department of Internal Medicine and Emergency at two municipal
hospitals in Rio de Janeiro before moving to the U.S. to further her career in Neurosciences.
Dr. Mitchell’s U.S. experience includes a Neurosurgery Observership focusing on minimally
invasive brain and spine approach with Dr. Shon Cook at Keyhole Brain and Spine, and at
Community Hospital in Oklahoma City. She has also served as a Research Fellow with Clinical
Innovations at Houston Methodist since August 2024.
In 2025, Dr. Mitchell was awarded a ThinkFirst Award by the AANS/CNS Section on
Neurotrauma and Critical Care for her work on a publication titled “Investigating Gender
Disparities as a Predictor of Morbidity and Mortality in Traumatic Brain Injury: A Cohort
Analysis.”
