NNS 2026

Eric Liu is a junior student at Ward Melville High School in New York with research interests in neuroscience, biomedical imaging, and quantitative biology. Working with his mentor, Dr. Zhao Jiang, at the Preclinical MRI Center in the Department of Radiology at Stony Brook Medicine, he conducts research on traumatic brain injury using longitudinal multimodal magnetic resonance imaging. His research focuses on identifying imaging biomarkers of injury progression and therapeutic response in experimental brain injury models. Eric’s current work investigates the neuroprotective effects of combined hydrogen-enriched water and minocycline therapy following traumatic brain injury, integrating quantitative image analysis with neurobiological interpretation to better understand mechanisms of secondary brain injury.

Eric represented the United States at the 2025 International Biology Olympiad, where he earned a silver medal. He is also a U.S. Biology Olympiad gold medalist and one of the top four national finalists among more than 11,000 participants. In addition, Eric mentors younger students in biology competitions and hopes to pursue future research in neuroscience and biomedical imaging, focusing on quantitative approaches to studying brain injury and neurological disease.
