Hongmei Yang, MD, PhD
Dr. Hongmei Yang is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Acute Brain Injury Research Laboratory at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. She holds an M.D. from Binzhou Medical University, as well as an M.S. in Neurology and a Ph.D. in Oncology from Jilin University, China. Before transitioning to her current research role, she served for eight years as an Attending Physician in Critical Care Medicine at the First Hospital of Jilin University, where she was board-certified in Internal Medicine and Critical Care Medicine.
Dr. Yang’s extensive background spans the mechanisms of inflammatory and neurological injury. Her scholarly work is published in high-impact journals such as Critical Care, Frontiers in Molecular Neuroscience, and Frontiers in Cardiovascular Medicine. Beyond her original research, she contributes significantly to the scientific community as an active peer reviewer for several prominent journals, including Frontiers in Neuroscience, Frontiers in Neurology, and Frontiers in Neurotrauma.
Currently, under the mentorship of Dr. Michael Whalen, Dr. Yang investigates the translational mechanisms of cognitive deficits following traumatic brain injury (TBI) and stroke. Her expertiseincludes advanced molecular and cellular experimentation such as brain cell isolation, neuronal culture, synaptosome preparation, PCR, Western blotting, immunoprecipitation, and behavioral analyses. With eight years of frontline clinical experience in neurocritical care combined with rigorous basic science training, Dr. Yang is uniquely positioned to bridge the gap between benchside discoveries and clinical applications for brain injury recovery.
